To start the home buying process the first thing you will want to do is meet with a mortgage lender and get pre-approved for financing.   This will help to determine the price range of homes to look at and determine a monthly payment that is comfortable for you.  The mortgage lender can explain the different types of loan programs they have available so you can make a decision on which one makes the most sense for you.

Before meeting with the mortgage lender, it is a good idea to gather the following items as they will typically need these for the pre-approval:

  • W-2s / Tax Returns for previous 2 Years
  • Pay Stubs for most recent 30 days
  • Previous 2 years employment history
  • Most recent 2 months or quarterly bank statement for all checking, savings, and investment accounts
  • Most recent 2 months or quarterly 401K / Retirement statements
